In both the foreboding and forewarning work by Orwell and the proposed reality of the ruling elite any concepts that pose a potential threat to the ruling regime such as liberty, freedom, individualism, freedom of speech and yes freedom of thought are classified as 'thought-crimes'. Newspeak is English with a very limiting, and constantly shifting vocabulary.
George Orwell may have been off by a few decades in his predictions, but 'newspeak' if the ruling elite has their way is becoming the language of choice by those touting the official elitist party line.
To change the way people think you need to control the language they think in. Words when used in the thought process differentiate Human beings from animals.
With words, those communicated to others as well as those that travel through our own psyche and thought processing, we are able to break away from abstract meanings and instinctual derived thought patterns. Words convey reality to various parts of our psyche and intellect, they are the fiber of our intellect.
In a police state conformity is ensured by brute force, the rulers stifle free speech and seek to stifle free thought. History has clearly demonstrated that Police states generally do not last long. In recent years Police States, totalitarians and assorted sociofascists seek to hide behind a smiling facade, they become a benevolent "Big Brother" looking out for the welfare of all us 'little Brothers and sisters'.
The little siblings, that's you and me, are conditioned to censor themselves in effect policing their vocabulary which effectively polices their thoughts and or their ability to convey those thoughts. Potential Dissidents are further conditioned via Jamming and gaslighting [See Liberal Brainwashing Techniques]. Conformity to the dictates of Big Brother becomes an admirable trait - Political Correctness.

Political correctness hides behind admirable traits, a tactic known as framing. Framing, when properly executed in social discourse short-circuits counter arguments. No one can speak up against an effective frame and say, Why, yes, I do think women should be raped and I do think women should be sex objects. when discussing the Feminist "rape culture" frame . And no one can speak out against the Gay intrusion into public schools under the guise of tolerance and diversity and state I do think students should kill themselves, or I do think gay kids should be beat up.
Society has become rigid in its thought, free thinkers are forced to cower fearfully so as to avoid violating instilled norms. Not wanting to be labeled as haters or intolerant and closed minded should they speak out against any of the protected privileged classes or concepts. This is the end result of a process known as 'jamming'. Jamming is basically psychological terrorism intended to silence expression of or support for any dissenting opinion.
The goal of jamming is to silence opponents with accusations of Racism, Islamophobia, homophobia, latent homosexual tendencies, misogyny and so forth.
Jamming creates a social stigmatization of anyone whom opposes the Agenda. The hidden command being to CONFORM to the will of Big Brother. Jamming is to ridicule the opponent in the eyes of the world and capitalize on our herd or pack mentality.
In the early days of the Obama Regime, any who dared oppose any of his/their policies or mandates was labeled a racist for opposing the fuhrer. That tactic wore a tad thin, but it is still seized upon by many of his minions and useful idiots.
Donald Trump and a few others like him have started a trickle that is slowly growing into a stampede against political correctness as dictated by Big Brother.

Calling someone an ‘illegal alien’ in New York City could lead to $250,000 fine - NEW YORK — New York City has banned the term “illegal alien” when used “with intent to demean, humiliate or harass a person,” the city said.
