US troops have been ordered to suspend activities in Colombia after a court ruled that their presence in the South American country was in violation of their constitution.
The order was issued after legal action was initiated by a group of opposition senators, arguing that Colombian President Ivan Duque had violated the lega requirement that the entry of foreign troops into Colombia must first be debated in Senate.
An estimated 53 US soldiers were sent to Colombia on June 1 as part of a Security Force Assistance Brigade, allegedly to conduct counter-narcotics operations. Some beleive they to be used against Venezuelan dictator Maduro just over the border
Venezuela has consistently claimed US troop activity inside Colombia, which in May was used as a launch pad for an attempted coup against President Nicolas Maduro.
The Colombian administrative court backed the senators’ legal bid ordering Duque to report to the Senate on the US troop presence.
Until then, US forces in Colombia must suspend all their activity.
