Mystery of Skeleton Lake
Enigma Solved ?

Durring WWII a British soldier in Roopkund, India first discovered the skeletons of Roopkund lake . At the base of a small valley Roughly 16,000 feet above sea level was a frozen lake absolutely saturated with skeletons. Come summer when the ice began melting, more skeletal remains were revealed, floating in the water and strewn about the lake’s shore.

The British occupiers of India first thought the remains belonged to Japanese soldiers who had died of exposure trying to trek into India. Expert examination laid that theory to rest as the bones were too old to be from Modern Jap soldiers.

Soft tissue and hair still clung to some of the bones, which had been preserved by the cold dry mountain air, but no one could adeqautely determine who they were, where they came from or what killed them. A 2004 expedition believes they unraveled the mystery of what caused their deaths. DNA evidence indicates that there were two distinct groups of people, one probably from the same tribe as they were all closely related, and a second smaller, shorter group of locals who may have been guides. All the bodies had died in a similar fashion - blows to the head. They believe that baseball size hail stones rained down of these folk and wiped them out. It a bizarre theory but possible. What I find hard to swallow is that all the several hundred people did not know enough to either take shelter, and assuming no shelter was available didn't know enough to cover their heads - that's basic human instinct.

A second possibility is a massacre and one prime suspect is Tamerlane. Tamerlane spent nearly 4 decades earning a infamous reputation for barbaric savagery. He massacred any who crossed his path while bringing hellfire and brinmstone to Most of Eurasia which included the Himalayas. He is said to have killed 17 million people. One of the many cities he depopulated was Delhi in India, where he massacred over 100,000 prisoneres just for shits and giggles.

Map Northern India Tamerlanes Hindustan

He was a post ancient warlord, his autobiography survives to this day. He went to war against India and his autobiography states "My object in the invasion of Hindustan is to lead an expedition against the infidels, to convert them to the true faith of Islam and purify the land itself from the filth, infidelity and polytheism" Only the followers of Islam escaped the sword. He also recorded the slaughter in his journal - "One hundred thousand infidels, impious idolaters, were on that day slain. The sword of Islam was washed in the blood of the infidels and all the goods and effects, the treasure and grain which for many a long year had been stored in the fort, became the spoil of my soldiers."

He was known for erecting enormous towers of victims’ skulls as a warning and to terrorize any would-be opponents. One of his many abominable acts was to build a pyramid in Northern India out of 70,000 human skulls as per his legend - the location of that pyramid is uncertain.

On his way to and from his "Hindustan" war he passed through the region where skull lake is located, looting, plundering, raping, torturing and murdering wherever he went. The skeletons turning up in Roopkund, India may well be some of his victims or victims of any of the number of petty warlords who preceeded him.
