A fantasmagorical theory may explain why we have only one reality instead of many, or basically why we are unable to perceive alternate universes. Quantum Darwinism, a theory from Wojciech Zurek, examines the phenomena of decoherence and quantum entanglement.
Quantum entanglement is a phenomena where the existence and actions of two subatomic particles are 'entangled' and ones actions influences the others instantaneously, regardless of the distance between the two. Unexplainable to date is that the very act of observing the particle[s] in question has an effect on the particle[s] reality, basically mind over matter. Some mysterious force apparently linked to consciousness has an effect on subatomic particles.
'When a mouse observes, does that change the state of the universe?'" [Einstein] or similarly - if a tree falls in the forest and noone is there to hear it - we know it fell because it's on the ground - but did it make a noise ?
Decoherence, or Quantum decoherence is the loss of quantum coherence the same as decomposition [of matter] is the loss of composition. In quantum mechanics, particles are interpreted in a wave function, which is used to explain multiple quantum effects. So long as the wave function of particles remains constant they are said to be coherent. When the wave function decomposes it is said to be decoherent. That's pretty basic and simplistic - However the real conundrum arises when we try to rationalize why the wave function becomes decoherent.
Boiled down - the particles or wave function is leeched off by the environment, BUT only when it ceases to be isolated. Isolation means no observation, once it is observed by a consioussness it becomes decoherent, it is altered by that consioussness. In theory, a quantum object in isolation and the information it contains can survive infinitely.
Don't feel bad if this flies past you, most of us are unable to think clearly outside the box our reality has placed us in. Even Einstein had difficulty grasping superposition, which is summed up by two 'Einsteinian' quotes - Does the moon change because a mouse looks at it? and/or 'When a mouse observes, does that change the state of the universe?' "
It is irrelevant if quantum information gets imprinted in the environment and is observed by a consioussness for classical behavior to emerge. It only matters that the information get there so that it can in some way shape or form impact the classical physical world. “A system doesn’t have to be under study in any formal sense” to become classical, said Jess Riedel, A physicist at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada.
Riedel, who once worked with Zurek showed theoretically that data from quantum systems can be replicated copiously into the environment. “... it’s necessary to access only a small amount of the environment to infer the value of the variables.” Riedel and Zurek calculated that a grain of dust a single micrometer across, once illuminated by the sun for a microsecond, will have its location imprinted about 100 million times in the scattered photons.
It’s because of this prolific redundancy that the classical world or classical-like properties exist. Multiple senient observers can measure the position of a dust grain and find that it’s in the same location, because each can access a distinct replica of the information. In this view, we can assign an absolute “position” to the grain of dust because its position in time and space has been imprinted on multiple identical replicas in the environment via photons. Different observers can reach a consensus based on their classical observation of the dust particle.
The Quantum Darwinism theory attempts to somewhat reconcile quantum and classical physics.
Quantum entanglement exposes the ability of particles to exist in multiple states simultaneously, something seemingly impossible inside our reality. So far as our consioussness knows we only exist in one constant reality. The objects we observe do not fluctuate between states of existence, not that we are able to observe anyway. The reason they don't fluctuate, OR that we are unable to detect / observe this fluctuation may very well lie in Quantum Darwinism.

As per Quantum Darwinism, only quantum states that can be transmitted via environment in the right manner [and with multiple copies], can be observed on the macroscopic, [Classical] scale. This eliminates a lot of quantum data and possibilities. What we are able to observe as per Zurek are the “pointer states” which we are able to observe classically. Location or speed that can be measured. During interactions with the environment around vs. those that have been altered or can't survive fade a wayinto never never land or perhaps an alternate reality.
Classical states, our observed reality, is effectually determined by the quantum states that survive transmission through the environment. It is only possible to observe the states that are fit enough to survive the process of transmission, natural selection -in a nutshell - quantum darwinism.
