Flying Dinosaurs of Indonesia
In New Guinea many local people live in extremely rural isolated communities, many speak ancient local languages and many carry an age old fear and loathing of a very large and ominous creature that glows in the dark as it sails through the night skies. Although it is referred to by various names, the most common are Kor and ropen.
Umboi Islanders, in Indonesia, report that their ropen has a 5-6-second bioluminescent glow. In the mountainous regions where there Bioluminescence is called the indava lights, the natives report that they glow for a tad longer than six seconds. A 2007 expedition recorded one of the lights flying over water. The footage was taken back to the USA, but video experts were unable to identify the light.
Prior to WWII, when their numbers apparently declined dramatically they were considered a deadly threat to local fishermen. Allegedly when the Japanese occupied the Islands in the 1940s their soldiers and sailors were commonly attacked by the creatures which elicited a Japanese campaign against them.
' . . . it was the japs [Japanese military] on the island who were attacked by the kor. They [Japanese soldiers] apparently shot several wounding them then followed them to cves [caves] and blew [blew up] the entrances. They called ships fire on the hills and pounded them for several hours.' - Japanese World War II ship shelled pterosaur caves
An American WWII pilot Duane Hodgkinson believes he saw one of these creatures in 1944 when he was stationed near New Guinea. Hodgkinson and a friend walked into a clearing, and spooked a very large creature that flew into the air. They quickly realized that it was no bird that they had ever seen or heard of as it circled the clearing. It had a tail 'ten to fifteen feet long,' and a long appendage at the back of its head but of course we all know these creatures are extinct - right ? Interview of Duane Hodgkinson
In 1971, an Australian psychologist, Brian Hennessy, reported seeing a dinosaur like creature flying over Bougainville Island near Papua New Guinea. Hennessy, employed by the Chongqing University of Medical Sciences in China described the creature as black or dark brown with a "longish narrow tail" He states that he heard a slow "flapping" and looking up saw a huge featherless creature with a "horn" at the back of its head flying overhead.
Multiple credible reports date well into the current era. Jonathan Whitcomb, a forensic videographer and cryptozoologist , has done extensive research on these elusive allegedly extinct animals and Authored several books including Live Pterosaurs in America.
Reports of bioluminescent nocturnal predatory flying creatures are common place in Indonesia, they are known locally as the "Kor" . The south pacific Kor and similar creatures which may be smaller, younger versions are known as the 'ropen' both bare striking resemblances to what science dictates the allegedly extinct pteosaurs look[ed] like.
Bioluminescence is a well documented natural phenomena, the most commonly known example is the common firefly. Bioluminescence has also been observed in fungi, marine vertebrates and invertebrates and microorganisms. Among higher 'more evolved' members of the animal kingdom it has been documented, although rare in some Owls. -- Review of accounts of luminosity in Barn Owls
The Bioluminescent aspect of the New Guinea Kor and ropen is consistent with reports from South Carolina. In a swampy region, near Bingham, South Carolina are tales of the Bingham Lights. Some have tried to tie these lights in with swamp gas, which is highly unlikely as swamp gas does not circle and travel from swamp to swamp as these lights have been observed doing.
Not far from where the Bingham lights have been seen, in 1989 Susan Wooten was driving near the town of Florence South Carolina ... the road was surrounded by woods and swamp when she spotted what sounds like a pterodactyl ... "it swooped down over the highway and back up gracefully over the pines ... it looked as big as any car with no feathers ... like a humongous bat" Interview Page 7 - 11 Live Pterosaurs in America
North Carolina - Brown mountain lights
Roughly 200 miles Northwest of Bingham is Brown Mountain, NC which has reports of a similar phenomena. The mysterious nocturnal flying lights have been observed on Brown Mountain and recorded for posterity as far back as the 1700s, native legends date them back even further.
Cherokee accounts state that the lights were the souls of Cherokee women searching for their warrior husbands who had died in war against a rival tribe. The presence of the lights predates the European arrival in the region.
A 1977 study concluded that many of the lights were refractions from artificial lights, however the claims of this study can only account for lights seen above the mountain crest, not those observed darting about below the tree line and below the crest.
Nor can they account for the tales of them that predate the advent of artificial lighting. The sightings are extremely rare but well documented. Corresponding sightings of pterodactyl like creatures have been reported in North Carolina and nearby Virginia. Searching for Ropens and Finding God Pg. 192, 200
Similar phenomena in the region include the Chapanoke Light in Okisko, NC. The Cove City Light, Devil's Racetrack Light, Ephriam's Light , and the Maco Station Light all in North Carolina.
Texas Marfa Lights
Two Thirds of the wat across North America is a small West Texas town known as Marfa. For as long as people have lived in the region, both Whites, Blacks and the Amerindians, they have been observing the Marfa Ghost Lights. Unlike the Bingham lights these luminescent phenomena appear over a dessert region not swamp.
The fossil record indicates that pterosaurs once roamed this region, conventional scientific data states it is extinct - but perhaps 'Quetzalcoatlus' the so called extinct pterosaur lives on in small numbers deep in the heart of Texas.
Lacking any other suitable explanation, some have attempted to claim that the Marfa Lights are atmospheric reflections of assorted lights and campfires. Others have attempted to assign paranormal properties to them - hence the term "Marfa Ghost Lights".
One researcher, James Bunnell wrote, "you might just see mysterious orbs of light suddenly appear above desert foliage. These balls of light may remain stationary as they pulse on and off with intensity varying from dim to almost blinding brilliance. Then again, these ghostly lights may dart across the desert...or perform splits and mergers. Light colors are usually yellow-orange but other hues, including green, blue and red are also seen. Marfa Mystery Lights usually fly above desert vegetation but below background mesas." Hunting Marfa Lights James Bunnell 2009
While it is quite possible that these lights in Marfa are something other than pterosaurs of some form or another, they are strangely similar to those reported in Bingham, SC and Indonesia.
In 1975 - 1976, about a 9 hour drive from Marfa, the Texas town of Harlingen was terrorized for several weeks by a huge bird like creature that was described by a Police Officer as 5-feet in height with a 12-foot wingspan. There were multiple accounts in 1976 in the vicinity. Most stated it had wings but was not a bird, that it had "mammalian features" , and "ape-faced".
On February 24th, 1976, several educators from San Antonio saw the creature . The 3 teachers indicated that the creature did not look bird or bat-like, but resembled an "order of FORMERLY EXTINCT flying reptiles that were thought to have been wiped out along with the dinosaurs nearly 65 million years ago known as pteranodons." Cryptopia - Big Bird
Six years later, 1982, in the same general area as Harlingen, about 4 AM, Ambulance technician James Thompson was driving on a road near Los Fresnos, Texas, when he spotted a huge creature glide very low over the highway in front of him. The animal, glided, that is it flew without moving its wings. It had a grayish -black color covered with a rough-textured skin. The wings were slightly over five feet across and it had no feathers. Thompson later looked it up and found the closest decription he could find was a pterosaur. Unexplained!: Strange Sightings, Incredible Occurrences, and Puzzling Physical Phenomena Pg. 156.
Miscellaneous Pterosaur Sightings - North America
Back in North America, sightings are scattered across across time.
"Summer of 1891 southeast of Fresno [California] . . . two featherless flying creatures with wingspans of fifteen feet. . . reputable residents described the two 'dragons' for the newspaper: broad heads, long bills, and large eyes. . . . the 'monsters' were held responsible for attacking chickens, with 'many of the hens being bitten in two and left partly devoured.'" July 31, 1891 Fresno Chronicle
2015, Boise, Idaho a pterodactyl like creature was filmed flying overhead. The usual claims of fraud and hoax have been presented and they are as feasible as the possibility that it is real. See - Pterodactyl-like creature seen flying over Idaho Fox 5 San Diego.
South American and Carribean Sightings
While visiting the Amazon Region of Brazil in February 1947 a British traveler from Liverpool described 5 large birds flying overhead with a wingspan of at least 12 feet from tip to tip. Ghosts and Demons: The Lost Things Paperback – June 27, 2015 by Kyl Cobb
Guantanamo, Cuba 1971. U.S. Marine Eskin Kuhn claims to have witnessed two pterosaurs flying together. He tried to get another eyewitness to verify what he had seen, but the creatures were gone before he could pull his sergeant through the door. Kuhn later made sketches of what he saw.
'Vampiro de Moca'
The Vampire of Moca.
In 1975, an outbreak of animal mutilations plagued Puerto Rico. A farmer stated that he was repeatedly attacked by a pair of grey bird-like creatures. These sightings were corroborated by others during the animal mutilation outbreak. Coincidentally the mutilations, cryptid sightings coincided with a rash of UFO sightings. The UFO aspect tends to validate the bio-luminescent theory relative.
One morning in 1975, Buenaventura Bello woke to find his flock of geese dead, strewn across his backyard in a circle. Each goose had two circular perforations on their bodies and were were sucked dry of blood. Bello notified authorities and a team white-suited men with Geiger counters arrived to have a gander at his geese. They scanned his backyard meticulously, and Bello and his family were forced by authorities to evacuate their home. Squad cars were posted to prevent access down his street.
In late February 1975, the area of Moca, Puerto Rico was stalked by what has become known as 'Vampiro de Moca' or the Vampire of Moca. Ranchers in the region reported that their farm animals were being ravaged by a nocturnal predator[s] and drained of blood. In the Barrio Rocha region, about a dozen cows, goats, several swine, a lot of chickens and assorted fowl such as Mr. Bello's geese, were all found dead, with puncture marks on their bodies, deep claw marks on their hides, and drained of their life sustaining blood.
The death count rose and farmers as well as town folk displayed angst and anxiety. By mid march of '75 of of the blood suckers was spotted up close, too close and very personal. The witness was a Maria Acevedo, who sighted a very large and noisy winged behemoth that landed on her home. She described it as 4 to 5 feet tall, and similar in appearance to a pterodactyl. Two day after the Acevedo sighting Cecilio Hernandez reported thirty of his chickens slaughtered in the same fashion as the Bello geese.
Come April the Moca Vampires range expanded, possibly due to the notoriety from the news coverage and copy-cat celebrity wanna be's. Attacks continued into May and June with hundreds of animals haven fallen victim to the blood sucking flying vampires. But as suddenly as they began the attacks ended as June ended and the Moca Vampire disappeared into old newspaper archives and collective memory.
A recurrence took place in the early 1990s but not to the same extent as the the one of the mid 70s.
In 1989, a new wave of incidents began but this time a man from Gurabo, PR in the mountainous center of the island is reported to have captured a unknown bird similar to the leviathan winged creatures from fifteen years earlier. The creature was smaller, about the size of a chicken. Another was reportedly captured by a woman named Maria Ortiz, both were described in the same fashion and the whereabouts of both creatures, their remains or any photographs are lacking, detracting from the stories credibility.
