Small spheres and discs were said to emerge from large cylinders. These sightings were usually treated as supernatural portents, angels, and other religious omens
Some contemporary investigators believe them to be the medieval equivalent of modern UFO reports.
The incident was preserved for posterity by Hanns Glaser -in a broadsheet news article which was printed shortly after the event.
The broadsheet and later the accompanying engraved woodcut illustration are archived in a Zurich Museum collection.
The translation of the article is as follows ...
"In the morning of April 14, 1561, at daybreak, between 4 and 5 a.m., a dreadful apparition occurred on the sun, and then this was seen in Nuremberg in the city, before the gates and in the country – by many men and women.
At first there appeared in the middle of the sun two blood-red semi-circular arcs, just like the moon in its last quarter.
And in the sun, above and below and on both sides, the color was blood, there stood a round ball of partly dull, partly black ferrous color. Likewise there stood on both sides and as a torus about the sun such blood-red ones and other balls in large number, about three in a line and four in a square, also some alone.
In between these globes there were visible a few blood-red crosses, between which there were blood-red strips, becoming thicker to the rear and in the front malleable like the rods of reed-grass, which were intermingled, among them two big rods, one on the right, the other to the left, and within the small and big rods there were three, also four and more globes.
These all started to fight among themselves, so that the globes, which were first in the sun, flew out to the ones standing on both sides, thereafter, the globes standing outside the sun, in the small and large rods, flew into the sun.
Besides the globes flew back and forth among themselves and fought vehemently with each other for over an hour. And when the conflict in and again out of the sun was most intense, they became fatigued to such an extent that they all, as said above, fell from the sun down upon the earth ‘as if they all burned’ and they then wasted away on the earth with immense smoke.
After all this there was something like a black spear, very long and thick, sighted; the shaft pointed to the east, the tip pointed west.
Whatever such signs mean, God alone knows. Although we have seen, shortly one after another, many kinds of signs on the heaven, which are sent to us by the almighty God, to bring us to repentance, we still are, unfortunately, so ungrateful that we despise such high signs and miracles of God. Or we speak of them with ridicule and discard them to the wind, in order that God may send us a frightening punishment on account of our ungratefulness.
After all, the God-fearing will by no means discard these signs, but will take it to heart as a warning of their merciful Father in heaven, will mend their lives and faithfully beg God, that He may avert His wrath, including the well-deserved punishment, on us, so that we may temporarily here and perpetually there, live as his children. For it, may God grant us his help, Amen. - By Hanns Glaser, letter-painter of Nurnberg."
Carl Jung brought the Nuremberg incident to light in the modern era with his book ~Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Sky.~ Jung attempted to explain them away as " a natural phenomenon with religious and military interpretations overlaying it."
Subsequent writers have somewhat convincingly fell flat on their faces trying to explain them away as sun dogs.
Although orbs are known to accompany sun-dogs the cylinders depicted in the wood cut are not. In fact the cylinders or phenomena closely resembling them have been reported for many years as UFO sightings.
Flying Crosses, which sound suspiciously like airplanes also do not accompany sun-dogs, although in a stretch of the imagination one could assume that warping of light by the Earths atmosphere, as is the case with sun-dogs could create the effect of a cross - how do illusional crosses interact with one another as well as the round saucer shaped orbs - and how do they cause one another to crash to earth in a vapor plume ?
The common consensus among UFO researchers is that the Nuremberg Incident involved aliens. Perhaps this is so or perhaps it involved terrestrial time travelers.
Perhaps, just perhaps, the Nazis really did actually build the Time travel device that they were known to have been experimenting with, and perhaps, just perhaps, their adversaries perused them back into the backwaters of History and precipitated the Battle of Nuremburg.
Fast Forward roughly 100 years to the opposing side of the English Channel and we have this incident repeating itself in the lesser known Battle of Berkshire in 1661 where the crosses and orbs appeared in a nearly identical fashion as the Nuremberg incident
Perhaps, just perhaps for the occupants of these vehicles Nuremberg was but a moment ago and Berkshire was a continuation of the same battle, as the enemy was chased through time and space.
Fast forward roughly 300 years from the battle of Nuremburg and the city becomes the spiritual capitol of a cult of political religious zealots we now know as Nazis. The Nazi hierarchy turned Nuremberg into the city for Nazi Party rallies, it's where they held their annual extravagant Galas that attracted hundreds of thousands of fervent supporters.
Fast forward another decade and Nuremberg is where the Allies tried and executed the Nazi War criminals - the Nuremberg Trials.
Just a moment ago - in the grander scheme of things that is - UFOs crashed and burned perhaps on the very spot where Nazi war criminals dangled from the ends of the hangman's rope. Just a far flung hypothesis - Could some of the occupants of those UFOs perhaps have been loyal followers of the cult of National Socialism while others Allied warriors who perused them into History.
That the project the Third Reich was involved in was capable of inducing Time Travel is theoretically possible - actually more than just theoretically possible, I'll coin a new phrase and state that it is theoretically probable. Circumstantial evidence indicates that the Nazis were indeed attempting to travel in Time - did they succeed ?
It's a good possibility that they did, and that there is an Historical record of it that dates back to 1561 in Nuremberg Germany.
